Heads of States, Ministers, from East & Horn of Africa, the AU, IGAD, EAC, IOM and others to meet on Climate Change and Human Mobility in Kampala, Uganda, July 27-29, ahead of COP27
Dear Media Editors and Journalists,
The Government of the Republic of Uganda, IOM, the International Organization for Migration, the UN’s Migration Agency, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)’s and other partners will host a Regional, Inter-Ministerial Conference on Migration, Environment and Climate Change in the East and Horn of Africa at the end of July 2022 in Kampala, Uganda. The conference, which will be attended by Heads of States and Ministers from East & Horn of Africa including, Burundi, Djibouti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania, and Uganda, Senegal as current Presidency of the African Union, the heads of and representation from regional bodies including IGAD and EAC, the Director-General of the IOM, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC and other partners, seeks to raise awareness about the impact of climate change driven migration and mobility in the region, and call for a more integrated approach and response to climate change, ahead of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt in November 2022. The conference will call for a more urgent response to addressing the impacts of climate change on human mobility in Africa, as well as highlight both positive and adverse implications on the future of African development. It is envisaged that the outcome of the conference will contribute to raising the important topic of human mobility in the context of climate change at COP 27, which can provide States in the region a powerful platform to have issues addressed. Egypt which holds the COP27 Presidency is invited. IOM would like to inform and invite the press to attend and cover the conference.
